Bug Houses, Bonding & Power Tools: A Brilliant Evening at Make On the Corner

Our evening Build a Bug House Workshop at Make On the Corner was a wholesome, hands-on triumph—and we’re still buzzing about it!

The session was co-hosted and developed by local artist Tom Hyland, who has been working closely with the Pyromancy team to step out of his comfort zone and manage his social anxiety. It was a huge milestone for Tom, and he did an incredible job leading and supporting participants throughout the evening—we’re so proud to be part of his journey!

The first part of the evening saw our brilliant young participants learning to use drills and screwdrivers to confidently build their very own bug houses. With guidance and encouragement, they assembled their structures and then got stuck into decorating them using leaves, pine cones, bamboo, sticks, and wood—each one a tiny, magical habitat ready for local insects to call home.

Later in the session, our adult group got completely stuck in, creating everything from quirky bug hotels to full-on luxury bug mansions! The decorations got more elaborate, and the conversations flowed. There were laughs all round as everyone shared stories about telling friends and family they were off to a “bug house building session”—and no one believing them!

But beyond the bugs, this session was about connection, confidence, and creativity. People left with muddy hands, warm hearts, and a genuine sense of achievement.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this joyful, messy and memorable evening. The bugs of Huyton are about to get seriously stylish new homes!

We’re also delighted to share that these sessions were made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, the UK’s largest community funder, which distributes over £600 million a year to support community-led projects and creative programmes uk.linkedin.com+2tnlcommunityfund.org.uk+2en.wikipedia.org+2. A huge thank you to National Lottery players—your contributions help bring these workshops to life! Find out more about their work here: tnlcommunityfund.org.uk.
